Hello everybody!
I'm new around here. I'm from germany, so my english isn't the best. I hope you can forgive me some mistakes.
I'm really crazy for fantasy books. I love Tad Williams, Tolkien (of course!) and also Robert Jordan. Lately, I stumbled over an serie from Andre Norton called "Witch World". Have anybody read it and can tell me something about it? I would love to hear any opinions about it to choose whether to buy it or not.

Hi Miri. Most of the Witch World series is written or co-written by Andre Norton. One or two years ago, I read the first three volumes in this series (Witch World, Web of the Witch World, & Year of the Unicorn). I thought the books were OK, but nothing great. The stories weren't too deep-kind of light & fast paced. I'll put it this way-I don't feel compelled to read the other installments in the series.

I'm sure the other members will give their thoughts as well.

Thank you ezchaos. I'm grateful for every help in the genre of fantasy. There are so many great books but also a lot of ... (you know what I mean). Maybe I will read it some time later. Now I'm bound to Jordans Wheel of Time

Andre Norton is an SF legend, with a number of great SF novels (especially for the younger market), but her fantasy Witchworld series imo is very ordinary indeed (though some of the novels do have "good bits" in them).

If you have to pay "new book" prices for them, I couldn't recommend them, although if you find a second hand one for a dollar or two (deutchmark or zwei?) and have some free reading time on your hands, then it may be worth trying one to see if it is to your taste.

Though I am a big Norton fan, and have loads of her books, I must admit to having never read any of the Witch World novels. However, I managed to find a second-hand copy of the first book in the series a few weeks agon on holiday in America, so I'll read it pretty soon.

For the moment, I'd recommend Elvenbane and to a less extent its sequel Elvenblood (there's a third coming out soonish) co-written with Mercedes Lackey, which I dearly love.

In my opinion, read the first 2 or 3, then decide if you want to go any further.

Andre Norton's Witch World novels are for the most part very good, many who came to Fantasy by reading the 'newer' authors may not like them a lot. Norton tends to center more on characterization then flash. If you read her you should know that the character, their past, motivation and internal conflicts are what drive the store. If you are looking for strong, real characters then Norton is a good writer to read.
