I did this last year so....

Since 2001 is coming to a close, maybe we can take an informal poll here to determine what the people of this board thought was the best book of 2001.

I would like to keep this simple so the minimal critera is as follows: (1) you actually read the book and (2) It was published in 2001. This can be either the first Hardcover edition or the first paperback edition (for the paperback to qualify, it has to be the First paperback edition i.e. while the hardcover of Winter's Heart was first published Hardcover in 2000, the paperback was published in 2001 so it could be counted).

Pick three books that you enjoyed the most: I'll dole out the points as follows-->5 points for the best book, 3 points for 2nd best book and 1 point for 3rd best book such that:

1) Book A by John 5 points
2) Book B by Rob 3 points
3) Book C by Mike 1 point

Let's shoot around some ground rules for a few days (let's try to keep this as simple as possible, if what I laid out above is too much, let me know) and then maybe we can start the poll next week and run it until the second week of January.

I can tally the votes and post the top 3 books as chosen by the members of this BB after the cut off date (that we can establish after the rules are set).

Three... http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/frown.gif

1. Declare by Tim Powers
2. Perdido Street Station by China Miéville
3. Tales of the Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin

bubbling under... Guy Gavriel Kay: Lord of Emperors, Sean Stewart: Galveston, Sharon Shinn: Summers at Castle Auburn, Neil Gaiman: American Gods, Mary Gentle: ASH, Lois McMaster Bujold: The Curse of Chalion

Best book of the year is My Name is Red by Orhan Pamük. I'm tempted to call it fantasy, but maybe I'll resist that http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

The first two aren't tough, but the third....

1) A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin
2) Perdido Street Station by China Mieville
3) Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson

It was a bumper crop of top notch genre bending this year - must have been something in the water.

1) Stranger Things Happen by Kelly Link (collection)
2) Return to the Whorl by Gene Wolfe
3) Ash: A Secret History by Mary Gentle

It was real tough to leave off Miéville's Perdito Street Station. Sean Stewart's Galveston was good too. And I'm still waiting for Jeffery Ford's Beyond and Power's Declare (which I think actually came out in Jan. 2001) to come out in paperback, otherwise, I might have been forced to vote early and often... http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I've only read a handful of fantasy books this year but since two of them have already been mentioned...

1) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
2) Storm of Swords
3) Winter's Heart

Lord of Emperors is 2001? Dang my local bookstore hasn't been carrying it. I'd put Sailing to Sarantium ahead of Winter's Heart and maybe even Storm of Swords.

Lord of Emperors paperback is 2001. And Declare is 2000, the tradepb is 2001 though, but I gather that doesn't count. Same with Galveston, hc in 2000, tradepb in 2001, no mass-market pb as yet.
Otherwise Declare goes no.1!

Should there be a different thread for commenting O Moderators?

Hmm.
1. Ash A Secret History by Mary Gentle;
2. Storm of Swords by George RR Martin;
3. Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson;

Lots for next year though - Fools Errand, Moorcock's latest Elric, poss. the Bujold (does this count for 2000? Thought it was 2001).

Perdido's Ok,Connie Willis's latest looks Ok, Kate Elliott's latest looks OK, lots of books here I might get round to reading in 2002.... http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

What about an Sf or a Horror list?
