Looking for a book

Hello,
i was recently told of a book that i thought sounded interesting unfortunately the person who told me about it could only remember some vague details about the plot and could not remember the author or the title
from what he said the story was about a universe that existed in layers and a family trying to escape from our layer to a higher one
if anybody can help me find this book id be extremely grateful
