A newbie here. I'm a Scottish fantasy and horror writer (see my web page if vampire armies, sea serpents, ruined castles and men in skirts are your kind of thing)

Looking forward to chewing the fat

Welcome, hey we are usually nice, especially to newbies, so why don't you tell us what you like to read, till we catch up with what you write?

The board is generally only nice to newbies if they have similar tastes to the board. Otherwise they tend to get slammed on and leave.

But hey, that's just my impression.

That may well be true of some boards, but i think in general everyone here is very good about respecting others opinions. There is a good diversity of tastes (within the genre!) being posted. We're all nice!!!!

I disagree Sam82. Look back on past threads where someone has just signed up and started a thread saying something along the lines "Terry Goodkind destroys all authors" or "Tolkien is a talentless slob". Now look at the percentage of the people that started those threads that are still posting.

At any rate, most of the regular posters here are good people, and won't abuse you too much, as long as you respect their opinions they will respect yours. I wouldn't hang out here otherwise.

Back on topic however:

Willie, you have told us what you write. What do you like to read?

saying something along the lines "Terry Goodkind destroys all authors" or "Tolkien is a talentless slob".

Eventine, this board is, in general, exceptionally nice to newbies. However, if someone comes barrelling in here and wants to make a fool out of himself, we'll oblige http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I read just about anything that I can get my hands on. I started about 35 years ago with Edgar Rice Burroughs, H Rider Haggard et al, then Robert E Howard and HP Lovecraft in my early teens. In the early 70's I progressed to Tolkein, then quickly on to Moorcock and Stephen Donaldson. Stephen King caught me for a while in the late seventies early eighties but I've weaned myself off.
Nowadays I read David Gemmill, Tim Powers, George R R Martin (I've been a fan since Fevre Dream), Simon Clark and I've recently started buying in to the Ash-Tree-Press reprints of early ghost stories.

Oh, and I've just finished reading the Harry Potter books.....fine if you've got a mental age under 10, but not for me.

Everyone was nice to me when I was new. It's now I'm not new that some true colours are starting to show! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

Point taken Shehzad.
For some reason the ones who get flamed are more prominent in my mind :-)

On a side note, do any of the administrators have statistics on how many of the registered users have posted in the last month, how many users have made it to member status, etc?
It would be interesting to see out of all the users registered, how many still actually use the system, and how many just used it a few times and then left. I know most of the people who were posting when I first started aren't now. Wonder where they went?
