Can anyone recommend a good space opera in comic book form? Obviously I already know about Star Wars. What I'm looking for are comics or manga comparable to Bujold's Vorkosigan books or Honor Harrington. Any suggestions?

Personally I think the sf genre is really under-represented in comics atm, the best suggestion I have is Universal War One. It was a french comic by Soleil just reprinted in english by Marvel, three big issues and lots going on. Beyond that you could try Drafted, which is an ongoing from DDP, easy reading with a few nice touches. Fear Agent from Dark Horse is the other ongoing that's worth a look, humour, mad aliens and some really fun stories.

Marvel have two very enjoyable sf stories, Guardians of the Galaxy is funny as hell but you kinda need to know the characters in order to understand it. If you're interested try the two Annihilation stories first, they were really strong, epic events and those characters appear in GotG. The other is New Universal, an old comic updated by Warren Ellis which is great except for the fact he's very slow writing it - only eight issues to date. Definitely worth a look to see if it's your thing.

Ok, I am not shopping in the right comic book stores, because I have not seen any of these. I suppose the Guardians of the Galaxy sold out - Marvel tends to at local store.

Never heard of Universal War One. The title sounds intriguing. I'll have to look into it.

Thanks!

Somehow it seems to be a genre that does not translate well into comics. I know of the Incal and the Metabarons series. Both are originally in french, but they have been translated. The two series are related. Both are amazing. Check these:

There was also a bunch of mercenaries (i think) called Alien legion, whose website is here:

I'm sure there are many more, but those are the ones that come to mind right now.

Thanks for the suggestions. Metabarons, Fear Agent, and Universal War go on the shopping list. New Universal sounds kind of intriguing, but I never seem to like Ellis's writing - just his ideas. I've never figured out why.

Because he often comes up a little short I think, I'm a fan and New Universal is one of the more realised mainstream titles he's writing but it is so slow appearing I don't blame you for giving it a miss. Probably one to pick up in collections. That said some of his space stories, though not space operas, are great short pieces of sf.
