Tolkien, for better or worse, is THE standard that ALL other fantasy authors will be judged by. He created a most believable world and populated it with believable characters and events.
Tolkien's popularity transcends the fantasy genre, by that I mean that folks who normally don't read fantasy have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Ring.
