There will be a Christmas special and two other episodes of the same length. Aside from that, there will be no new Dr. Who this year. David Tenant is taking this year mostly off from Dr. Who to play Hamlet with the RSC. Not sure when the other two specials are set to air. So you can look forward to the next proper season of Dr. Who to air sometime in the spring of 2010.

David Tennant has now announced that he won't be carrying the sonic screwdriver after the 2009 specials. Speculation is now rife for a replacement, but RTD has promised a spectacular end for David's Doctor.

I'm so sad to hear that.

Me too...he was a great Doctor - one of the best IMO.

I'll put this in spoilers just in case...

Patterson Joseph is being touted as the next Doctor. No doubt this will cause some controversy as the actor is black. I’m all for him though having seen his very Doctor like performance as the Marquis in the BBC adaption of Gaiman’s Nevewhere (look it up on Youtube).

The other possibility is David Morrisey who is supposed to be playing the Doctor in the Christmas special (The Next Doctor). However, I’ve also heard rumours that this Doctor will be an earlier incarnation.

I cried when I found out that David Tennant was leaving.
I'm a second generation Doctor Who fan (my dad watched it as well) so I was no stranger to the regeneration/replacing of the main actor drill, but I didn't think it would be happening so bloody soon.

And then I hear the rumors that idiot boy from Twilight--whatsisname, Robert Pattinson?--is open to stepping in as Doctor #11. No way. Please, no. Of course, rumors are rumors, but I hope this one stays that way.

Well, if it helps Falcon, there's always lots of rumours when these things are announced, and they're rarely true.

Often the suggestions are only because the people mentioned are in the public eye at the time and the overexcitable press are trying to fill a space.

Lead in a global film to UK TV series? Unlikely, I'd say..

And whilst I am here, congratulations to Doctor Who, who was first shown on UK TV 45 years ago yesterday. Even allowing for the gap 1996 - 2005, still the longest running TV show on British television.
