Ok this isnt about Jordan so umm chill http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif
I just finished reading "The Curse of Chalion" by Lois McMaster Bujold and I thought it was pretty damn good. The main character is pretty ineresting. Anyone else read it?
Oh and if you are wondering about why I'm thanking Mr Jordan well the only reason I brought the book was because it had a quote from him on the back cover. RJ has great taste http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

I need to thank Robert Jordan as well! The only reason I picked up A Game of Thrones several years ago was because of Jordan's quote on the front cover - "Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant".
Thanks, RJ! Although it was probably the worst thing you could have done for your own career. You heartily endorsed someone who is busy stealing readers from you. Something tells me you might be regretting that little quote right about now. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I don't think that one flies Rhaegar. The man still sells big time and has made a fortune. He will multiply this fortune by factor X because he will publish at least three more books, books that will undoubtedly be bought by his huge fanbase. I don't think he's concerned over money. Most likely he feels that his series is good enough to take on any competition. I think Martin would feel the same way.

I agree with you Mith. RJ will continue to sell a ton of books. I only wanted to point out the irony of RJ endorsing what is now his biggest competitor. And my thanks to RJ is genuine, believe it or not. Without his quote, I wouldn't have picked up A Game of Throne those many years ago. At that time, I still considered myself a Jordan fan, a put alot of faith in his opinion.

There is a certain irony yes. I wonder if he would have thought that Martin would get this big.

He is probably very happy that Martin has done as well as he has. I doubt he regrets helping a fellow author. If he did he would not still be giving authors quotes to go on there books. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I want to thank Jordan too. Thanks for making a incredibly long and drawn out series that made me look for better authors. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

Competitor? What do people only readone author? Do people stop reading one author because they have discovered a new one?
If people stop reading Jordan it is not because of Martin, methinks, but rather their tastes not jelling with Jordan's work.
Anything else is just plain goofy and, well, incredibly stupid on said reader's part.

You're basically saying there's no such thing as competition in the Fantasy genre because people read a lot. Do you think the competition is then merely the size of the market itself, the fact that people can't read all that's released and as an author you only have to make sure you get good publicity and tell a tale that stands out somehow?

No. I am pointing out that the market is much larger than is suggested by the above Martin syncophants _and_ that most readers are smart enough to determine a book is not for them based on their perceived quality and not a set number of books one can read or buy.
After all if Rhaegar et al, were implying the latter, they must not pay much attention to the statistics as Jordan still sells circles around Martin last round. This in no way correlates with quality despite my own preference for Jordan over Martin or the fact that two co-exist quite nicely on my shelf as , no doubt the two do on others' shelves.
