Can't remember title

Hi, just found this forum and I hope you can help me. I read this book around 1-2 years ago. Bear with me please cause I don't remember a lot.

Alright, the book is focused around this one guy, we'll call him John cause I don't remember his name, that apparently has a lack of magic/talent. He's sent to see someone about finding out his magic/talent. Along the way he runs into this village, in this village some dude is accused of raping a women. John leaves the village with the Girl, we'll call her Jane cause I don't remember her name. John and Jane get separated on their way to this magic/talent finder. Anyways John gets to the guy and the guy has him look into a mirror cause it'll show him what his talent/magic is but the mirror shows him nothing (I remember him being a null so others magic cancels out when used on him though). Later when he gets back to town the town elders or whatever say that if he can't prove his magic he will be banished, so he ends up getting banished. Anyways the place he lived has/had this force field around it to protect themselves from the outside world. While outside he meets Jane again (She got banished for something) only Jane is different. Apparently Jane changes physically and mentally over the month from Hot and dumb to Ugly and Smart (It happens slowly I think).

With me so far? I believe this was the first like 70% of the book, I forgot a lot of details about the end, sorry.

Thank you for any help.

Not sure about the rest, but this does sound like one of Piers Anthony's Xanth novels, perhaps A Spell for Chameleon?
