I didn't want to start two threads.
I came across some positive reviews(Reading in December 2008 topic) about Juliet Marillier 's Sevenwaters Trilogy [or tetralogy].
Any comments?
What do you think?
K J Parker
What about her?
What would you suggest to read by her? Where to start? What is the best series she has written?
Thanks a lot.
A.

Sorry, but can't help. Haven't read either, but is KJ Parker a woman? It's a question that served as an amusing soapbox for Orson Scott Card. He loves the author's work, btw. Here's his rant:

We've got a pretty extensive discussion on Parker here:

I haven't read KJ Parker, but she(?) does garner some good praise here at SFFWOrld.
As for Marillier (http://www.julietmarillier.com/), her first novel, Daughter of the Forest was the Fantasy Book Club selection waaaay back in October 2004 (http://www.sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8717&highlight=Marilier).
I liked the book very much, thought the feel of the book was great and the story compelling.
Last month a new Sevenwaters novel published Heir to Sevenwaters (http://www.julietmarillier.com/HTS.htm)

Yeah, that why I called it trilogy/tetralogy :)
Thanks for links!

I just discovered Daughter of the Forest by Marillier and am enjoying it very much - am planning to buy the rest of the series.
I tried her Bridei Chronicles but found it hard to get into the first time. Ive dug up the book and am planning to give it another try.

Not according to one of "her" publishers, and not that it really matters:

Ahh, I see. Induce utter gender confusion to inflate web chatter, speculation and book sales. I will now adopt the strategy. I will, henceforth, be known as the Artista-formerly-known-as-PeterWilliam.

I've never read either, but I have Daughter of the Forest on order from Amazon and will probably be reading it around New Year's. Will post my thoughts when I'm done (probably. no promises).

big thanks to radone for the orson scott card link.
the point about the author intentionally withholding key information is my main complaint about Steven Erikson, too - always hinting at truths that are known to the writer, but hidden from the reader.
But the Fencer and Engineer books are worth the time spend on them, and Card makes a better case in their favor than i ever could.
