Lankhmar

I have read Fritz Leiber's SF short stories and enjoyed them. I would like to have a go at the Lankhmar stories about Fafhrd and Gray Mouser.

I have seen these available in compilations in the Gollancz Fantasy Masterworks, but i hate the covers. Recently they seemed to do an updated version of the first volume simply called "Lankhmar" I find the cover art more bearable on this edition, but hesitate because i don't know if they ever plan to release the second volume in this style.

I see in the States, Dark Horse have re-released the series not long ago. The cover art is ok. Can't say I like it that much but its not too off putting. Can anyone comment on the quality of these books. Normally I find American books to have nicer paper quality than here in Britain, but as this is Dark Horse, a comic book publisher I'm slightly curious.

Otherwise I quite like the old paperback covers with art by Jeff Jones.

Anyone have any thoughts on contemporary issues or should I look through second hand bookshops for the older paperbacks?

Well, I like to read new rather than used so I would advise new books. But that depends on what you want of course.

As for paper quality, I have the Gollancz omnibus which I quite like. It's very sturdy but it's unread so I don't know how it would hold up if I started browsing and bending it for 700 pages.

The US editions are smaller as far as I can see, so not as good value. There are some 8 books I believe, whereas Gollancz has published 2 big ones.

I recently picked up the first book of the series! I showed it to my daughter and as I, appreciate this author.

Lieber offers us an insight to other realms, and I really want to give his series a try!

Any thoughts.. any one???

I like to read new too, but the thing with the gollancz books is they use really nasty paper. In a few years it will be a yellow brittle mess. It hurts me to say it as an Englishman, but Americans make better quality books. Ironic, as they tend to have significantly worse cover art (although the Fantasy Masterworks are giving them a good run for their money - some of the ugliest books I have ever seen).

I just wanted to check that Dark Horse have made decent books.

Thanks for replying to this rather bizarre request of mine. I will give these DH editions a shot.
