shrouded in mystery

I've recently enjoyed some books with characters in them that were quite mysterious. They usually have an aura of superhuman power, or in any case, something that most others can't do. Naturally their origins are not revealed until the later stages of a book or series. Alaan from Russels The One kingdom is one, and GRR Martin has several of these very mysterious characters. There's also the Fool in Hobb's Farseer and Tawny Man books.

Any others?

Erkose in Moorcock's Eternal Champion saga. Though I've only read
Von Bek, Elric, & Hawkmoon so far.

Heh. Erekose is not so much veiled in mystery, if you read the stories about him. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

Erikson has some mysterious characters. I'm reading Memories of Ice now, and there is a certain standard bearer there.... hmmm....

Thom Merrelin (sp?) from WoT. There's something going on there and I have my suspicions...I suppose I'll find out by the end of the series http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

The Shrike from Hyperion. Far as I'm concerned, he could have had his own book.

I've heard much about the Shrike, and the Hyperion Cantos for that matter. Is there a bit of a Fantasy streak to this SF work? I see it recommended sometimes, and the Shrike is apparently quite intriguing. What sort of being is he like?

Thom Merillin? I guess he is mysterious in a way, but practically all the characters in WoT come off as mysterious at one point or another. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

My choice from WoT would be Verin. From book one to now she still hasn't given up all her secrets and she's mentioned quite often.

Also noteworthy is Mazrim Taim. Need we bring up the seemingly endless debate about his true identity?
