I'd be interested in knowing what you guys consider the most interesting races you've read about. Anything goes, as long as they're not standard humans (something like Kurtz's Deryni would count as an alien race for instance).

Any thoughts? Please state what makes them so special, maybe those unfamiliar with the series will want to read it just because of that http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

My vote is first, for the Kender of Dragon Lance. They are the little theives of Krynn, but they never understand that they are doing the thefts - its sort of subconcious for them. My second vote is for Robert Jordan's Aiel. I may not understand theur society but I like them nevertheless.

I myself was thinking of the Targaryens from Martin's ASOIAF, who are humans but are descendants from the Valyrians, the great race that was doomed.

Also, the Melniboneans from Moorcock's Elric. Or the princes of Amber from Zelazny. I'm told William's Sithi are a very good re-interpretation of Elves.

Okay, I'm also liked the Kender in Dragonlance and the Sithi in Williams' MS&T.

I also like the Drow (dark elves) from Forgotten Realms and the gnomes from Dragonlance (they are freakin' hilarious!!!). I also always thought the Ogriers in Jordan's WoT were cool as well as the giants from Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series.

I've got to put my vote in for the Igors in Pratchett's Discworld. I love the thought of people who truly do take the best parts of their mentors...

I like high (Tolkenien) elves; or the Sidhe of Irish legend.

The Eldar are quite magnificent indeed.

The armored bears from Phillip Pullman's books are cool. Also the witches.

AndI guess the daemons can't really be considered a separate race from humans.
