A few years ago I read a science-fiction novel basically about a psychiatrist/psycologist who gets a call from a world renown inventor and genius to go to work for him on his island, and when she gets there she finds out that her job is to psyco-analyse a sentient computer that he and his company have built. I can't remember much else about it, but I'm fairly sure it's a relatively modern book, i.e. 1990 onwards.
Thanks for any answers.

Sounds like you might be describing one of the possible plots of the TV show Lost

Maybe (I've never watched Lost), but this was definately a full length novel.

Thanks to Kevin Reilly on comps.sys.sinclair, I have the answer (he's right, I checked). He says:
That's "Society Of The Mind" by Eric L. Harry, from 1997. An interesting
read -- I particularly liked his vision of a 'holodeck' that uses a
full-body feedback suit and VR, almost achievable with current
technology -- but not in the same league as the earlier Clancy-esque
technothriller war stories that launched his writing career.
