How many books did you read last year?

I saw this in the Sci-Fi forum and I just wanted to know how many books people have read in a year of any genre. This is 2008 we're talking about.

I tend to be a copycat, I guess, but good ideas need to be duplicated right?

The mods are welcome to slay me if this thread is redundant.

This poll is public.

Speaking for myself only, I rarely look at the Sci-fi threads, so this thread is new for me.:p As a result, I see no reason why General Discussion can't include this topic. There are many "copycat" threads in the Fantasy and Sci-fi forums.

I tend to devour books.......read them very, very quickly, and get through them at a pace of about 3-5 per week, more if school is out. Problem with that is, I have a rather poor memory for detail. Months after I have read a book, even one I greatly enjoyed, I may not be able to give more than a very sketchy plot summary.
The good part of reading the way I do is that I can reread books......2-3 times if I really love the author......and get as much enjoyment as the first go-through. In fact, it;s not uncommon for me to get much more out of a second read!

In 2008 I finished - started many more, finished a bunch started earlier than 08 - about 240 books, about 230 fiction, and roughly half 08 releases, about 10 2009 arcs and 15 ss collections/anthologies.

By genre: 78 sf, 65 f, 46 mainstream fantastic - as mentioned these are books that do not usually get stacked in the sff section of bookstores but have or may have, unreliable narrator and all, fantastic elements - 39 mainstream non-fantastic

I read 41 books in 2008 which is a lot for me, maybe the most ever. Partly, I read a lot of mystery books early in the year and many of those were fairly short.

I honestly don't understand how somebody can read 60 + books/yr and actually comprehend and remember what they read. I have this discussion with my wife frequently as I watch her 2 or 3 books to my one.

I read 20 outside of school and I was pretty proud of that. I'm definitely planning on beating that this next year even though I might actually have less time with law school starting in the fall. (:( - regarding less books not law school)

Is this for ALL books read in 2008 or just "fantasy?"

All books. That's why I put it under General Discussion because I wanted a full amount so I can stand back in awe.

Right, when I log in I just click new posts and hadn't realized this was in GD.

Anyway, I read over 80 books last year.

My tracking system conked out midway through the year, from the info I have it looks like somewhere between 75 and 90.

It has to do with the way one reads. I - and perhaps your wife - read for the sheer enjoyable escape of it all, and I am generally eager to get to the climax and resolution. I fully comprehend what I'm reading, but probably miss many details.
You - and my daughter, who feels the way you do - probably savor every word, take your time, enjoying a book like a fine wine that you don't want to swig down. You most likely remember things your wife doesn't within a couple of months of finishing a book.
That's why, when I reread a book I particularly liked, or one in a series that I need to review before the next installment, I generally get a great deal out of it than I did during the first reading.:)
