Linux for playstation 3

Hi all,

I have heard that by installing linux on my PS3 I will be able to use MSN messenger on it.

I know that by installing it i will have to back up all my saved data on a hard drive or it will be erased, so I will use this oppertunity to whack a bigger hard drive in my ps3.

Sooo, if there is anyone who has done it first hand would you be able to help me?

First of all, If i install a new hard drive and linux, willl it effect my psn name at all? And I have wipeout HD and gran turismo 5 prologue bought from the psn, will i be able to copy them and then re install them later with all my sve data?

And lastly......

How well does MSN messenger work on the ps3 with linux? Or is there a better version to use?

I used to have Ubuntu on my PS3 so I'll try and answer some questions...

And yes you CAN use programs like pigeon to access you MSN, AIM, ect lists with ease

1. The PS3 is either in Linux, or the PS3 OS at any given time. If your running Linux is is exactly like having it on a PC. When in the PS3 OS the PS3 is exactly like it is before Linux is installed. There are no performance hits to your PS3...they are completely seperate. You can not access PS3 games while in Linux. And you can ONLY set aside 10gb for either the PS3 OS or Linux (make it Linux)

2. If your running SNES or some other games on Linux on your PS3, it will run full speed *if* you thread the sound to its own Cell SPE. You can also use the Six Axis to play : )

IMO Ubuntu is the easiest and fastest Linux Distro for PS3. Here is a a pic of Ubuntu on my PS3 running a movie and a SNES game at the same time (again I own the original so NOT ILLEGAL):
