Analysis of Feist's books? Which books are good, which were let downs

Feist was my proper introduction to fantasy, and most people think Magician was good, the rest sucked or something else.

I liked every book. Silverthorn lacked a bit of finesse in the plot. Assassins was okay, but not great. I enjoyed the other two Krondor books after completing the games several times, but i can understand why some people think they are poor.

Magician, Darkness at Sethanon, Empire Trilogy, Shadow of a Dark Queen (despite bamboozling me with new characters, though cool ones), The King's Buccaneer, Rage of a Demon King and Honoured Enemy stand out for me. Faerie Tale was a good light read too.

Obviously he is not considered as great as the other big names, but for a lighter read i think he's brilliant and he got me interested in fantasy.

I liked all the Riftwar Saga. Had an epic feel all it. And great characters too.
The Prince of Blood and The King's Bucaneer where great swashbukling adventures. No "save the world" cliche. The characters in Serpents War Saga where great too.

I think Feist's main strenght is his characters --you love this guys.

His great weakness, though, is not having the ability to write a "correct" ending. So he resorts to deux ex macxhina, that sort of thing.

Kings Bucaneer
Shadow of a Dark Queen
Rage of a Demon King (best one!)
Shards of a Broken Crown

IMO Riftwar Saga is his best series though The Empire Trilogy is good too.

Magician: Master is his best book. Darkness at Sethanon was great for the Valheru portion but ended up like The Rage of the Demon King in that I felt it had all the great ingredients he needed in the pot but he didn't cook it well. Shadow of a Dark Queen's prologue with the Saaur was fantastic but the rest of the book slowly fell flat.

The observation that Feist doesn't know how to conclude a story is very apt. It probably is one of his greatest weaknesses as is the Pug problem and his inability to create really interesting bad guys except for some nameless shadow, serpent priest, or wizard that you know Pug could wallop if he just tried.

Yep, he can't create good bad guys. But I don't think Pug is the problem. Pug is ok; the writer should have moderated his power, one way or another.

Magician, IMHO is definitely his best. A solid, entertaining read, one of the books that helped me get into fantasy.

Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon aren't as good but they are both entertaining light reads, the quest/save thw world thing done well.

The Princes of Blood and The King's Buccaneer were both passable but pretty average. They seemd like filler material and the new characters were boring, with the exeception of Nakor.

The Serpent War saga started really well with Shadow of A Dark Queen which was one of his best, introducing a caat of good new characters. Rise of a Merchant Prince was decent but diverted from the flow of the series too much. Rage of a Demon King was mixture of good and bad, it was an excitng story but there was some lame plot devlpments and some really crap bits. Shards of a Broken Crown was a weak conclusion to the series.

The Krondor series are crap. Pointless, badly written, boring filler. Fiest should stick away from the filler stuff inbetween series.

Haven't read the Empire series.

Runebreaker - Honoured Enemy with William Forstchen is the first of three Legends of the Riftwar books set during Magician.

Conclave of Shadows is his next project continuing on from Shards Of A Broken Crown.

Well, I've read Riftwar Saga and King's Bucaneer and The Prince of the Blood and I liked Feist very much. I read also his Horror story Faerie Tale and I am waiting for Serpentwar Saga. After day or two I am gonna take Krondor: the Betrayel!

I loved the Kellewan books. Mara is one of my favorite fantasy characters.
