Cool. Last time they came out in 3 parts though, didn't they? Or was that AFTER they had alreayd come out in one volume...?

I can't wait to read the Hobb story. Is it connected in any way to her other books?

The book coming out in the US in December is a hardcover book.

The book that came out in 3 parts (called Legends 1, Legends 2, Legends 3) was the paperback version of the hardcover
Legends I. :D

It took me a bit of investigation and Hobbit on this thread I think to help me untwist my confusion. :) People were talking here about Legends II, and I found Legends 3 at my local bookstore.

Talk about bad marketing by the publisher.

In Canada we had the 3 mass market pbs, but the full version of the first Legends was trade pb, which made it a great deal--it was only 21 bucks CDN, which I guess would be about 15 US.

I was planning on getting the next Legends but if it's hardcover I might pass it over.

And just to confuse things further, they split the UK paperbacks into 2 (not three like the US!) paperbacks.

Confused? You will be.... :)

The book's been released in Europe this week. You can order it from Amazon UK.

I'm happy to report that 'The Sworn Sword' is very good, if not quite as good as 'The Hedge Knight' was. Hobb's story is also good.

Now reading the Alvin Maker story.

Bliss.

I've read a few more stories now. I'm reading all the authors I've read before first, and in no particular order. Here goes:

Pern - OK story, but not dazzling. I haven't read any Pern books for about 8 years or so, but I picked things up pretty quickly. It was an interesting little plot idea, I probably would've gotten more value if I was a big Pern fan (ie recognising characters) than I did as someone who just remembered the concepts of the novels.

Otherland - I was let down by this. It was an OK story, but really did depend upon the reader having read Otherland to get any value out of it. Being a HUGE Otherland fan, I expected big things from this story, and was let down. I thought some of the questions about Orlando were better left unanswered, and this story just felt clumsy redoing a happy ending for an already happy ending.

Elderlings - This has been the pick of the bunch so far. It's a reasonably independant story (set before all the Farseer and Liveship books) and fills in an interesting piece of back history. Robin Hobb uses the tried and true trick of creating a character you're meant to dislike and "bringing them to their senses" - ala Malta Vestrit. And it works. The diary form works pretty well, although it lost some credibility in the last few sections (mainly due to the length of the diary entries in situations where the character is exhausted, etc. Fitz's writing about events long past works better!)

Riftwar - I liked this story. It's probably been about 5 years since I've read a Fiest book (finished at the end of the Serpentwar books) and this actually made me want to pick one of the early ones up again just to get reacquainted with the world again. It's reasonably well written, although the dialog is a little corny. If you go in expecting anything other than good ol' Fiest simplicity, you'll probably be disappointed.

I'm going to start the Sword Sword even though I haven't read The Hege Knight - we'll see how I go...
