Ursula K. LeGuin has some excellent books on the subject. The Dispossessed is about an anarchist society that is started and the triumphs and setbacks that go with it. The Left Hand of Darkness is about a socety where the people deeply want to be free, so they will only elect a mad king to rule them.

More recently, the Richard Morgan books (Altered Carbon, Broken Angels) touch on themes of libertarianism (and socialism) while being very exciting reads as well.

The LeGuin books are much more directly about the subject of libertarianism, but I think the Morgan books are a faster, more exciting read although with a lot less on the topic.

Probably the best place to find libertarian SF books would be to check the Prometheus Award. You can google or wiki it to get the list.

The Prometheus Award is an award for libertarian science fiction novels given out annually by the Libertarian Futurist Society....

Some authors on the list: Vernor Vinge, Poul Anderson, Neal Stephenson, Ken MacLeod etc.

The writings of Gordon R Dickson have a libertarian leaning.

Actually, a left leaning novel like John Brunner's The Shockwave Rider seems Libertarian in it's focus. In many ways it's similar to The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

I know that it may seem like I haven't read as many when compared to some of the others, but I do read when I can. I hope that you find my selection good enough to please even the hardiest of science fiction readers.

1. Total Recall by Piers Anthony
2. The Sun Cycle by Eric Van Lustbader
3. Logans Run by William F. Nolan
4. Logans World by William F. Nolan
5. Logans Search by William F. Nolan
6. Dark Force Rising by Timothy Zahn
7. Heir To The Empire by Timothy Zahn
8. The Emporers' Last Command by Timothy Zahn

A lot of Baen's military sci-fi writers seem to lean that way. In Michael Williamson's Freehold series, the society is libertarian.

Wow, I read four of the six on the list liked three of them and was hugely disappointed in The January Dancer.

Which 4 of the 6?

Or what 3 did you like, I should ask?
