I read a novel when I was a teenager that dated from the seventies about a Russian/Communist colony on Europa that encountered a creature they termed the Alpeh. It was described as strikingly bio-mechanical, and disinterested in humanity in the sense that it went about its own enigmatic business with little heed to the humans trying to study and understand it.

If anyone remembers this story I would like to know its title and author in case he wrote more about the same creature.

There is a novel with a similar setting - Aleph, Marxist society - but on Ganymede called Against Infinity by G. Benford - pub date 1984

It's an expansion of some story or stories from earlier

Thank you for your kind words; I remembered vaguely a story like that - read the Benford novel many years ago - and knew it was from a big name US hard sf author, but not a classic author; Google/Amazon did the rest
