I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help me with this, but I may as well try. I read an excerpt from this book aaaaageeees ago. I think it was in the back of an Anne McCaffrey book.

The main thing I remember was that the main character was a very young girl, and that apparently she was very intelligent. There was a comment about adults being confused by her intelligence. I believe it took place on another planet, which she was visiting for some reason.

I think she had come with her parents, who were doing something there. Archeology maybe?

I wish I could offer more.

Could it possibly be 'The Ship Who Searched' by Anne McCaffrey and Mercedes Lackey?
