Back when I was in sixth grade, I picked up my first SF book. I read it, and it really got me started in reading.

I have no idea anymore of what the book was titled, or the story, or the author. I think it was a short story collection.

All I can remember of the story was that it involved these transparent mazes which held gems. The protagonist found the largest one ever, which therefore held the largest gem. He went in, and ended up trapped and starved to death. The exit, as it turned out, had been right behind him.

Does anyone have a clue as to what this might have been?

Thanks,
John

If the plot has mutated slightly with time in your mind, then this might be "In the Walls of Eryx" H. P. Lovecraft. You can read it here (http://www.spacewesterns.com/articles/104/).

That is most certainly it. 30+ years of mutation isn't kind.

THANKS!
