Bashing and orneryness on the board

Now, don't misunderstand me here, I know everybody on this board has the right to have and voice their own opinion on this board, as established in the Constitution, but don't you moderators think that sometimes the author bashing on this board gets to be a bit annoying and goes a little overboard.
I mean, I've noticed a lot of author bashing from people (and I won't name any names) here recently and in my opinion it gets a bit out of hand and turns into orneryness. For example, people using fowl language about the author/authors and bogging down the topic with how much they hate the authors and sometimes flaming others for liking the authors they don't like.

I just thought I would let you know about this and voice my opinion on it.
Thank You

Thanks for your comments. We are trying our best to control this lack of respect for the forum and its members. However, unfortunately, not everyone agrees with our policies at times! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Personal attacks and foul language will be removed immediately, as I am sure you are aware, Zsinj16.

I think the moderators are doing quite a good job. But ultimately it's up to the members posting in the forums to set the standard for the kind of debate wanted. The moderators can't be everywhere and moderate everything all the time, after all.

Its better to Flame Out than Fade Away!

Who’s next on my list of authors I don’t like! Some guy that writes about a silly mirror…

Hey, what a great idea, Ogg. I reckon that author would love all the free publicity! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

EDIT: Oh, but, Ogg, you more than anyone should understand that the mirror isn't silly. Did it not restore your life in another thread here?

Back to topic, I second nicba. It's true that there is some author-bashing but I normally tune 'em out and look for the intelligent posts. Especially jewels in the compost heap. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

In general I think if a member goes too far, the other members are not too slow in putting them in their place. It is when the offending member is too opinionated (or just pushing buttons) to get the message that we the Mods need to step in, or that member does something so mindnumbingly stupid that we have to get heavy.

The Moderators have found we cannot win in these situations... we will either be too lax, or be accused of throwing our weight about.

As regards author bashing, if the opinions are well presented and do not degenerate into abuse and profanity, I see nothing wrong with this. In short, if a members does not like a particular author... he has every right to say so.

Members attacking members however is a different kettle of fish... obviously we will get diffrences of opinion, and if my opinion differs from another member... I will say so, but I would never dream of insulting or attacking a person for having opinions different to mine.

...but I would never dream of insulting or sexually transmitting a disease or even attacking a person for having opinions different to mine. That is unless they are short, fat, balding, have buck teeth, can't spell, type by hunt and peck, refuse to install MSM,don't know what scrachings are, think unix is cool, sleep in your undies or have a bad gas problem!
