Many years ago, I read a short novel but cannot now recall the title or author. The book could have been written at any time prior to the early 70's. All I remember of the plot is that the main character was a "Man" as opposed to a "man." Men with the capital M was a very distinctive feature of the story. Men, with the capital M, had phenomenal mental powers but they lived in secrecy like monks, hiding their abilities, even from other humans. There was a reason this was necessary but I remember almost nothing of the plot now. I've been scanning every thin little novel in a yellow cover I can find in my local 2nd-hand book stores looking for it. I would like to learn the title of the book and its author if anyone can help. Thanks.

I seem to remember something to do with Men with a capital M in Cordwainer Smith's short stories, though I could be mistaken.
