I once read a book about a boy (teenage years) who is mysteriously transported forward in time to a post-apocalyptic world. He encounters various forms of alien wildlife before stumbling upon strange humanoid creatures that speak an almost unintelligible dialect of English. They are at first hostile, but he soon wins their trust. He discovers that he is actually on Earth, just in the future, and humans have wiped themselves out with nuclear weapons thousands of years ago. He is eventually transported back to his original time (into a shopping mall, I believe).

Can anyone help me remember the title/author of this book?

Time Storm by Gordon R Dickson perhaps?

Very close. Unfortunately, the boy was alone in his travel.

A few details I forgot to mention (although they may go without saying). The creatures he begins living with are very primitive, leading the boy to believe that he has traveled back in time to another planet. He later discovers clues in his environment that explain otherwise.

Thank you all for any help you can provide.

Did the book title happen to start with a 'v'? One word? If so, I've been searching for this same book for a while. I can't find anything.
