I picked up his first pick a couple weeks ago, and I still havent read it because I have been mixed up in other books. If anyone has read his stuff I'd like to know if it is worth reading, as I have heard mixed reviews of it.

Hey Raistlin, welcome to the forums.
I've read the three books in the series so far and I really enjoyed them. They are pretty fast paced with a well thought out system of magic.
This series features perhaps one my favorite monster-creature--The Reavers though their presence is not truly felt until book #2 (Brotherhood of the Wolf) and even moreso in book #3 (Wizardborn).
Good solid reads.
Erebus, DennizM, Za..any thoughts?

I have read the first two books and am waiting for #3 in paperback.
I really enjoyed the books because they are so original. Perhaps the writing wasn't always top notch but it was very good non-the-less. I was willing to overlook a lot of the writing problems because I was so into the story and the world Farland created. VERY original and well worth the read.
Oh, and I would second the motion on the Reavers...those things are nasty-cool!

I, too have read the first 2 books. Although I enjoyed them, I was not all too impressed with the character development. However, the system of magic and the world is well thought out. The magic systme itself (while pretty evil!) is very different.
I will certainly continue reading the series, but am waiting for paperbacks.
So...I would recommend reading it, especialliy since you say you already have it! *s*

Er... that is REAVERS Ogg, not cleavers. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Welcome from me too Raistlin, just do me a favour... don't stare at me too long with those hourglass eyes... they freak me out. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I agree about the books... as regards the writing style, book one did get on my nerves at time... but the story helped me to look away from that. The style improves considerably in books 1 & 2, IMHO at least.
Do any of you know that Farland is actually David Wolverton... a quite well known SF author? I suspect a few of you will http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yes, I have one of his book. On my way to Paradise.. What I have heard, it's excellent, and it's his first novel.
Not in print anymore, but, I seem to find it alot in the Used Book stores..
He also wrote a few other scifi series. Cant remember what they are called, but, one was where Nethandrel Man is transported to a other world and studied .. Of course, rebellion, Dinosaurs, etc are in it.. Looks neat..

if you can get them, Serpent Catch and Path of the Hero are pretty good, better than when he writes as Farland. They are about a young mixed Neanderthal-Human man who comes of age in a world created by paleantologists to study earth's past. There, they create all the different prehistoric fauna and flora, each period occupying a different continent. A race of aliens dont believe humans should roam space, and force the paleantologists to become isolated on the surface of the planet from other humans. After hundreds of years, most Neanderthals are slaves of the Slave Lords, a group of humans descended from these paleantologists. Only a small group of Neanderthals are still free...
I hope i didn't give anything away, but this is one of my favorite scifi/fantasy books.
