I've read 2 books by this guy.
- One was far-future, post-singularity (I think?). Took place on a space ship set to make the first human contact with alien. I was young and remember being pretty confused at times but really liked it. I recall the main character being an avatar...maybe everyone on the ship was too. And the alien wqas not conventional. It was like some coordinates, or something. There was some barrier they needed to cross...
- The other was not so distant future, on earth; something to do with a moving, living island and also some sort of disease/outbreak (I think - this one's even more vague)
Not much to go on, I know but thanks for reading
