Is dragon keeper worth buying

I'm thinking about it... the book comes out in U.S. in January, but for the people who have already read it, is it worth it? I'm buying for like $26... Pros and cons about the book?

I've read it, decent book and pretty interesting. I'd probably wait till the second novel came out though since it was originally meant to be a stand alone. Other than that i don't see why not, if you are a Hobb fan its worth it for some small cameos alone.

Haven't we done this before (http://www.sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23347)?

Oh well, to answer the question: no. That is: not unless you've already read the Farseer, Mad Ship and Golden Fool trilogies. And not unless you have little or no patience.

Or, alternatively: yes. If you have read those books - and liked them - and can't wait for the paperback, that is.

Dragon Keeper is half a book, and very much the first, rather slow half. It's good, in a slightly quiet and stolid sort of way. It's a setter-upper, and it does that well: nothing is even remotely resolved in the book, but you are left hungry for more. It's also rather big and clunky, and looks very nice on a bookshelf. Be sure to save a space for the undoubtedly equally big and clunky second half of this so-called "stand-alone" book, though
