Help looking for a book … go figure

I believe the book is from the 70’s or maybe 80’s. The technology used in the book is similar to F.M. Busby’s Star rebel series. The one thing I remember is that the ships had to land like a rocket on it’s tail. The books were sort of a cross between F.M. Busby’s Star Rebel and David Drake’s Lt. Leary series. If any of you know of any books kind along these lines please suggest them!
