What story is this from?

A man walks across a bridge daily, to work or somewhere familiar, I don't recall. One day, as he's crossing, he senses something different but can't quite put his finger on it. Turns out aliens have removed the city to some kind of galactic lab. When residents leave the city they are immediately connected to a virtual reality that simulates their visit outside the city, based on their memories, but in reality they are placed in suspended animation until they "return" to the city, where their actual lives and activities are restored and continue seamlessly. I don't recall if this guy who crosses the bridge figures out the plot, or why he is even featured in the beginning of the story.

I don't know the story you are looking for; but this sounds similar to the movie 'Dark City'.

Afraid i cant help either, but just checked out Dark City on imdb and will definitely be getting that on DVD.
