John, what did you think of Eriksons "Deadhouse Gates" and "Memories of Ice"? I think I remember you saying you were a little bit disappointed in GoTM.

I've read Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun recently. Damn good! But a slow, tiring read. That does not mean it's not worth the trouble. I highly recomend it.
Now, I'm reading Children of Dune. That's great and fast --perfect combination! :)

Been flipping and flopping between Fantasy and Science Fiction moreso than usual, but I'll mention the one Fantasy I had trouble with.
The Well of the Unicorn
by Fletcher Pratt
Picked up the Gollancz Fantasy Masterworks edition at a Fantasy/SciFi convention a while ago
a) because I have been trying to get the Masterworks editions here in the US for a while
b) Michael Moorcock, in his intro to one of the Elric novels specifically points to this book as inspiration.
I had a very tough time with the writing style and language Pratt used, almost like a bastardized Nordic. Story was ok, but the langauge style was too much of a hurdle for me to truly enjoy the novel.

I've been in one of those funks where I'm having trouble finding something interesting to read. I recently read The Runelords by David Farland-wasn't impressed :o and I don't think I'll be seeking out the other books in the series.
Next, I read The Fifth Head of Cerebus by Wolfe for the second time. Wolfe is God.
Yesterday, I started Silverberg's Lord Valentine's Castle which, from what I can gather, falls into the science fantasy genre. I think I'll enjoy it.

I won't try to corrupt this post...this time anyways :)
I've read 2 long series as of late:
1. I've spent the last week reading David Gemmell's Drenai series. I'm glad that the more recent novels have started to break the predictability of the earlier ones. His world is now more fleshed out and there seems to be more insights into his characters.
2. Even though there were only 4 books, Tad Williams Otherland definitely would count as a long series. Averaging over 800 pages per novel :) It dragged a little bit in the two middle volumes, but overall it ranks in my Top 10 series list. I can't wait for Tad's next series! http://executor.hil.unb.ca/craig/smilies/thumbup.gif

I just finished Fortress Draconis by Michael Stackpole which while a completely different kind of book as The Dark Glory War was still very good.
Also I finaly found a copy of Mairelon the Magician by Patricia Wrede after owning and enjoying its sequel. it was good to read the begining of the story.
Thats one of the great things about this Forum I read The Dark Glory War liked it. Waited around for a year for the sequel then had to turn my attention else ware. If I hadn't seen it disussed here I might have had to wait until it came out in my local book shop and I stumbled over it rather than getting it from Amazon right away.
So thanks who ever brought it up first ..
