Fire upon the Deep. Help!

So, I've started Fire Upon the Deep by Venor Vinge. I'm about 100 pages into the book, and, while I am enjoying it, I'm slightly confused.

Now, what I was wondering. Is that standard? Being confused for awhile in this book?

Anyone else read this book? It looks to be a promising scifi novel...:)

Keyoke:

I was pretty confused   myself when I read the book. I was particularily confused with who the aliens are/were. I think he tried to be too smart with the whole "who are the aliens, who are the humans" trick. I thought his previous book A Deepness in the Sky was much better.

Confused - yup. :)

I guess you'll need to stick with it to see what happens.

*cough*
Fitz - Deepness is the sequel, set years after Fire , though there are connections. :D

I too enjoyed Deepness more. I'm sure I read or heard somewhere that Vernor is on with a sequel to Deepness. ;)

Oops, I guess it really *did* confuse me. Reverse what I stated, I was less confused by and liked A Fire Upon the Deep more than A Deepness in the Sky,

I thought that A Deepness in the Sky was a prequel to A Fire upon the Deep .I think it was set 30000 years prior. It might have been written after it though:confused:

Whoops! :o

Now it's my turn to apologise - that'll teach me not to be such a 'smart-bottom'. :D Meant to type 'before' and put 'after'. :o

Yes - Deepness was written after Fire, but as 42 quite rightly says it is set as a prequel to Fire. There are however links to Fire, and I think I'm right in saying that Vernor Vinge is on with a book that will be between the two so far.

So Fitz you may be right - or you may be confused (like me, it seems!)

A Deepness in the Sky is a great book IMO,but a little confusing from time to time.:) But it is one of the best SF books I have read so far...

Well, I've just finished reading Fire Upon the Deep, and I have to say I am extremely pleased that I decided to stick with it despite the confusion at the beginning.

A wonderful novel! I am looking forward to the next (Prequel), Deepness in the Sky.

Keyoke, I agree that 'Fire Upon the Deep' was confusing at first, but it's still one of my favorites. FF, I also like 'A Deepness in the Sky' a little better.

I think the reason FUtD was confusing at first was because of the super high technology, what with much of the story taking place in 'The Beyond'. Also, you had that group wolf race (I can't remember their names), which I found a little hard to get used to.

ADitS was a little easier to get into IMO because it was set in the 'Unthinking Depths' where technology can only reach a certain level.

It (Fire) is a little confusing/slow at the beginning but then it starts rolling and you can't put it down.
Dune was a little like that.
Is Deepness the same way?
