Take a look at the new covers for MODESITT'S Recluse books. Scroll about halfway down the page. http://www.orbitbooks.co.uk/orbit/orbit_news_index.asp?PGE=&ORD=orbit&TAG=&CID= The WoT book on that page also displays the new style for his paperbacks.

Heck those Recluse covers are nice but er they just don't seem right.

Wow, covers I can actually take seriously. If only I could say the same for the actual text...

These cover are good. Far more serious than the older ones. But they, indeed, could have been more fantasy like (Moddesit's ones especialy)...

Sure as hell is better than your standard Darrell K. Sweet cover that features Rand Al'Thor (regardless of whether its a WOT book) and any number of horses.

Though I do see your point Caldazar.

Yes it looks a little to earthy, a little to real.

Anything is better than Darryl "What do the main characters look like again RJ?" Sweet.

I do like some of Sweet's work, however, I think he's way overused. As Fitz says, his standard cover is a group of fantasy people standing around or sitting on horses, while some vague battle rages or some 'bad guys' lurk in the background. I never understood why more publishers don't tap more artists for cover art.

Why don't they hire better artists? Because it's much cheaper to hire incompetent artists who don't know what horses, or anything resembling good art, looks like.

Actually, Sweet's earlier stuff isn't quite as bad. He did the original US covers for Donaldson's Covenant books and at the time, other covers for Del Rey. There was more variance in his choice of cover images than people milling about on horses.

Since he's been doing a lot of Tor's covers, they have been pretty much the same.

DAMMIT DAMN DAMN AND BLAST!!!

That is just so bloody typical!!! I have 9 Recluse books in the old cover format... and when I eventually get the latest in the new cover design it is going to look way out of place now!!!! It is going to be the same with the Jordan books too.

Now THAT just annoys me!!!

ooo I feel better for that :D
