Utopia and apples! My daughter needs your help!

So I've decided to come to this fount of knowledge. Don't let me down . . .

There is a sci-fi story, not sure whether it's a novel or a short story, about a Utopian society that is destroyed when a group of scientist (?) introduce an apple to the people.

It's NOT the Bible. And it's not "The Giver."

The only other thing she can remember about it is that the food supply seems to replenish itself. Take a bite and the food regenerates. Vague, but I hope that helps.

This *might* be Jeffrey Ford's Physiognomy which featured a White Apple as a symbolic element.
