so ok, all the characters are drawn out of Irish myth. but otherwise, isnt it an SF novel rather than a fantasy one?

not that it matters either way, but still...

As far as I understood, Artemis Fowl was a fantasy series, not unlike Phil Pullman's Dark Materials and Rowling's Harry Potter.

Definitely Fantasy - or rather fantastical. Has a rapidly growing 'word of mouth' reputation this one - sort of Douglas Adams & poss. Terry Pratchett. A lot lighter than Dark Materials.

The new one is supposedly quite good too if you liked the first - it's being read by my daughter now, so I'll pass on her comments when she's finished...

Though I've only read the first, I'd say it's fantasy. It certainly has it's technology, but it reads more like a YA fantasy novel. But I must say, I enjoyed really this first book and will be reading the rest of them as they're released. I like Colfer's characters and writing, and am glad I finally got around to reading it.

It's high tech Fantasy. I'm about 1/3 into the "Artic Incident" and i'm liking it slighty better than the first so far but that may be due to already knowing the characters.
