The Vlad Taltos series by Stephen Brust might be your best bet.
Some of the books (Orca) are outright mysteries, others read like the hard boiled detective stories of the 40s by Chandler or Hammet.
Right on target with this description of Taltos. You can almost see him in hat and trenchcoat.

You could also try Glen Cook's Garrett PI books - which I *think* are what you are looking for... and hell, with Cook you can't go wrong.
His latest,Angry Lead Sky (I think that's right), was not up to his usual Garrett books. It was all over the place and the 'aliens' were kind of lame.

You could also try Randall Garrett (it's the writer's name, nothing to do with the main character of Glen Cook's excellent series mentioned above). His Lord Darcy series resembles a lot Chesterton's Father Brown stories imo.
I thought that he resembled Sherlock Holmes, though I haven't read any Chesterton so what do I know?:p Still a very cool premise, when I read it about fifteen years ago or so, and enjoyable characters.

Try Jim Butcher's series of books called the Dresden Files. The first book is called Stormfront I believe. They are about a wizard detective in 'our' world. When there is a murder that has hints of the fantastic the Chicago (I think) police department get the wizard Dresden involved.
I read only the first one a long time ago so the details might be sketchy. Pretty good stuff though.

I've always been meaning to try this series. I'm a big sucker for that hard boiled detective having to deal with the weird.

Roger Zelazny's, The Chronicles of Amber stick out in my mind as a kind of mystery fantasy series. The main character doesn't know what the heck is going on or who is who so he has to piece things together... I haven't read another fantasy book that read quite like that one.
I haven't read it but Something from the Nightside by Simon R. Green seems to be a PI type thing along the lines of The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I think there are three in the series so far (correct me if I'm wrong). Anybody read these?

The best mystery fantasy stories I have read are the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

The Lord Dacey series by Randall Garrett is definately worth reading if you want a mixture of mystery and fantasy.

Well most of mine are vampire mysteries:
Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series is good for the first 7 books or so.
Tanya Huff also has a series with a retired Toronto police detective it is called the Blood Series and has just gotten new covers for the old books so I think she is going to be writing it again. She also has a series called The Summoning and the main characters are trying to track down and reverse the seep of evil into the real world.
Those Who Hunt the Night & Travelling with the Dead by Barbara Hambly are also mysteries
Jim Butcher's Dresden Files are also good. Wen Spencer's Ukiah Oregon series is also good if a bit light.

Loved the the first book by Barbara Hambly, but the second one just kind of limped along near the end.
