Loved the the first book by Barbara Hambly, but the second one just kind of limped along near the end.
I agree the first one was better. The second one has pacing problems I think with the cutting in of the two stories about James and Lydia. The story with James is more action-oriented but thinner, and Lydia's story is subtler yet more meaty. I have read the book a couple of times and it is better on the 2nd or 3rd reading than the first.
She is writing the Benjamin January mysteries now, which are also very good, but has said there is at least one possibly two more books in the series. I keep hoping she will get on with them because I really like Don Simon Ysidro and James and Lydia.
I also forgot another Vampire detective series: P.N. Elrod's Vampire Files. It has a detective who has become a vampire, though it is not one of my favorites because the characters and stories seem too bland.
