I thought this was a Niven story, but I can't find it in my collection or in his listed bibliography:

Several observers (one I vaguely remember as alien) are waiting to receive a historical message from a long ago probe sent out at near light speeds to some star/planet. The protagonist laments about how his lifetime's work (this probe) was made instantly obsolete by the discovery/reception of FTL travel (again, I vaguely remember the technology being given to humans by the aliens).

There also may be a second story I am conflating in my memory (or it could be this same story) where aliens are waiting to see if the probe performs to it's designed spec before closing a deal with the humans.

Anyone have any idea what I am talking about? TIA
