there is an infinite energy source and almost infinite production of goods and consumables. Class system is turned upside down, the "wealthy" are rewarded by not having to consume so much stuff. The "unwealthy" have large quotas of items they must use.

The main character has an idea to program a robot to wear out the items for him.

Anyone know what that book is?

Thanks,
Xi Chin.

That sounds like Frederik Pohl's 'The Man Who Ate the World' which is a novella, but is also in a collection of the same name.
