I can't put my finger on the name of this novel put out within the last 3 years, I think a first-time author, but maybe not. There's a planet with angels hanging from chains over a deep chasm or something along those lines. This was not urban fantasy, but a quite well-received sf novel. Dark, very dark. Maybe a one-word title? Help?

Got it. I thought of Scar, but that got me tangled up with Mieville's The Scar.
Scar Night (http://www.amazon.com/Scar-Night-Deepgate-Codex-Book/dp/0553589318/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268357238&sr=8-2), by Alan Campbell.

Whoa! Never heard of this, but it sounds awesome. I just might have to pick it up this weekend if I can find it.

It's not a science fiction novel, Intensity, it's an alternate world fantasy novel. And a very good one. There's at least one sequel to it.

My mistake, KatG, thanks for setting me straight. Terms in the reviews like "multiverse of time paradoxes" left me with an sf impression.
The sequels look less popular, however.

There are two more books in the sequence
Iron Angel and The God of Clocks.
I have read all three and the first is the best. The next two are highly inventive but lack control.

aye, it's definitely an alternate world fantasy and a fairly dense, unreadable one at that.
