Hi all
I'm looking for a series I started in 92. I bought the first book secondhand and had no opportunity to buy the rest of the series.
The main character was a Mage and minor noble. The plot was driven by a sucsession whereby tradition required that the new monarch had to subdue one of a number of elder powers and thereby gain its help / power in order to claim the crown. The new Monarch subued a little known but powerful ocean spirit i think, and instigates a war with one of the tribes of a derivative Mongolian horde nation on the kingdoms borders.
our hero discovers that the elder ocean power actually controlls the monarch,
and tries to expose him. I know that the book ended with our hero deing and posseing the body of one of the kings henchmen.
The magic system was far eastern. 6 levels of consciousness. one had to battle and subdue a spirit guide and defender to advance to the next level. This gave one access to spells and power.
Im asuming that the book was published in the 80ties.
Would appreciate it if someone could give me the author or name of book.
