How to approach astronomy

Looking for a unique set up for a planet that can support earth like life.

Retrograde moon?

a moon that spins the opposite way? does physic's allow that? I'm guessing no.

Any other set up's?

more then one moon is old. What about a red or brown dwarf? with a normal but somewhat weak sun?

I guess you could always be vague.

Binary stars are very popular this year. Also, check out the variations on tidal properties of competing moons and planets on Isle Six. Remember that this is all just a backwash to your story - something to influence cultural behaviors. Avoid the "gimmick" setup if you can.

Shop smart. Shop Space Mart.

I sorry but all original stories have been done before.

A short list of life on weird planets:

Hal Clement's Mission of Gravity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_of_Gravity) and its sequel, Star Light (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Light).
Robert Forward's Rocheworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocheworld) and Dragon's Egg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon%27s_Egg).

For weird places that support human life, check out Larry Niven's Ringworld series (Ringworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringworld), Ringworld Engineers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ringworld_Engineers), Ringworld's Children (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringworld%27s_Children)) or his Smoke Ring one (The Integral Trees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Integral_Trees), The Smoke Ring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smoke_Ring_(novel))).

I don't think you're going to come up with something unique, but you might come up with something distinctive.

Just an FYI, Triton a moon of Neptune is a retrograde moon. Recent theories are about how it was captured from another planet (a Super Earth) and it stole the moon from the collision. Just read this the other day in Science News or another of those weekly collections of news.
