Well, I'm relatively new to writing, and I have already started a fantasy standalone. But it is slowly developing to be a helluva long book, so maybe it'll be a trilogy or a mamooth style series. I dunno.
And I can't seem to vote.

I'm writing a series that does end on the sixth book (of course, at the begining I didn't know it would be that long), so neither I can vote...

Well, my first effort was a "stand alone" though it was sort of the middle section in a period of history covering the life of one character. Looking back on it though it had it's good points it was word heavy and a bit "dull" in places.
I have various half started stories all of which are "stand alone".
But the second book, which is undergoing editing at the moment is a series, or rather what could be the first in a series aka "Disc World"

I have one 'stand alone' finished. One is in the process of planning.
But both will have a sequel-series. Still, those WILL end and I WON'T stretch the story. I have a point to reach and stations to pass on the way there - no growing out of the limits I already set.
Word. :p

I'm working on a stand alone fantasy, though it is slow going b/c I usually loathe my writing until it's had a chance to simmer for a month. Makes proofreading hard. Anyway, it's an adult fairy tale based on All-Kinds-of-Fur. I love fairy tales, esp when they have an adult spin, though I also like reading YA stuff. I also love reading pretty illustrated fairy tales for children. I just love reading I guess.

cool.
i can so understand the temptation to start a saga. why do you think the fantasy novel breeds in its writer the urge to be another Homer? is it because it all starts off from myth epics in the first place?

what if you would just write a five or six book series, like the lost years of merlin?

When I started the GemQuest series, I had no idea that it would go beyond one book. The story just does not seem to want to end, though, and I am now on the fourth book. In addition, it depends on how long each book is. My agent (former) told me that publishers want fantasy novels to be under 400 pages, preferably 300 -325. I can't do that. I think it is probably hard to begin a book with a specific length in mind. So much happens as you start to write. It ends when it ends, and that is not up to me! This series may end with the fifth book, only because a four book series doesn't feel right, and besides I still have so much to do with the story! But it may also continue on depending upon how it all evolves.
