and if so how many?

Personally I rarely read more than one at a time. Occasionally I read two but its always one fiction and one non-fiction.

I am a one book at a time man. I like to focus all of my attention on a single book until I am done and then move to another.

I try to read one book at a time. But if I start to get bored with something, I will set it down (with my place kept, of course) and move on to something else. Then, usually when I finish that next book, I'll try moving back to the previous one. Sometimes necessity dictates it, as well. For example, I am presently reading Watcher of the Dead. But, I have a book due back at the library in a week and a half that I have not started yet, and which cannot be renewed. So if I don't finish Watcher within the next four or five days, I will probably have to put it on hold. Which, given my work schedule, could be a stretch.

The most books I've had open at one time (in terms of having their places kept) is about five. But I definitely try not to get to that point too often.

But if you mean like switching back and forth between books after chapters or something, then no. That would just be frustrating, and I think I would get characters and plot points confused.

Only one fiction at a time. Sometimes I have a non-fiction on the go at the same time.

I speed read, so one at a time works out to a lot of books in a week.

I have the attention span off a...

I normally read 2-3 books at a time, because my mind needs something new every few minutes.

At one point I had 8 books on the go, but realised that I wasn't very connected to any of the plots or characters and cut it back down to 3.

2 seems to work nicely for me, so that's how I'm doing it now.

I tend to read three books at a time. I mainly focus on the Speculative books and when I have time or need a break from the genre I switch to something else for a day or two to rest and recharge. I can't read two books from the same genre at the same time as it just makes things jumbled in my mind and blurs things.

Book 1-I read one fantasy/Scifi book.
Book 2-Listen to a book via podcast of cd and listen to it on the subway on the way to and from work.
Book 3-Read a book in a different genre lately it is either books talking about the war in the middle east from the grunts prospective or books on golf.
