Just wondering how many linux users there on the forum. I used be a Windows user but I couldn't handle the $100 upgrade every time Gates decided he needed more of my money. I'd like to try out a Mac but that means I have to buy a whole another system and since I already had a fine computer I just blowed Windows away and installed one of the linux flavors. Its just like trying different flavors of Ice cream, if you don't like this one you just download a different one until find the one thats just right. What are you running?

I still run Win98. I tried some of the upgrades, but didn't like them. A little too sluggish and they had trouble running my games. And what would I do without games? Get a social life? *shudder*

I use WinXP on my main workstation here at work and at home. All but one of my servers (at home and work) are running on variety of Unix. Most of those boxes are running linux, with a couple using Solaris...and 1 lonely NT 4 server (behind a firewall).

I'd run linux if I could play all the games I have.

yaa games are a problem if your running linux, there just are not many popular games that have been ported to linux. But I'm not much into games so thats not a problem for me. I liked Windows3.11 it was fast used very little harddrive space and it didn't blue screen on me all the time like Win98 did. Thats what I like about linux I don't think i've had the operating system lock up once since I started using it, can't say that about some of the programs I run on the OS but I just nuke them and keep on going no reboot required. Linux ain't for everybody though its still a get your feet wet Desktop OS, where Windows is a point and click easy to use system. But if you liked Win3.11 give linux a try.

Win 98SE here.

Reasons not higher:
I want game support- win NT and 2000 aren't compatible with all the games I like to play at the mo.

Win ME is just win 98 with a few bugs fixed- mediaplayer 7 and directx 8 are available for win 98 as well using a download/magazine cover disc. The only feature not in win 98 is the back up of the OS - don't really need it- also there's an article somewhere (i think at www.emulators.com but i may be wrong) about constant backups using up most of ur HDD eventually slowing down ur comp- article's a few yrs old now- probably fixed by microsoft - still not really worth the upgrade price)

Just XP to explain now- still a relatively new OS- i wait at least a yr for bugs/security issues to be found and fixed b4 i even consider upgrading. Need to have a look at the pros and cons of this OS in a few months time- but 98 is doing every thing I want it to do, so I'll probably wait til i need to upgrade my comp before upgrading my OS (well i built the one I'm using last summer so it'll be a few yrs yet- by which time I'll have to upgrade since win 98 can only handle 512MB RAM).

At Work: 2000 server
At home: Win 98

I tried linux for a while but eventually got rid of it - there just wasn't enough stuff you could do with it.

On the topics of keeping your OS for games, does anyone know what you can do to get old DOS games running on new machines?

I have tried running an old game I have called Tyrian on my win98 box and it doesn't want to start. I am guessing it is due to changes in the OS. Any ideas?
