I remember one called Orca, about a bloke hunted by a killer whale seeking revenge for the death of it's mate. A sort of mammal equivalent to Jaws.

It's a bit outside your field of enquiry but The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham.

Shoot. I was going to say Meg. Based on the thread title.

What about The Poseidon Adventure?

or... Moby Dick? That's a fiendish whale. But it's not a thriller by any stretch of the imagination.

Or that stupid book now with "and sea monsters." What's that one called?

Peter Benchley has a few books with what you are looking for:

Jaws (1974)
Beast (1991)
White Shark (1994)
Creature (1997)

Hobb's Liveship trilogy is full of sea serpents... they're not so much the main focus of the books though (a very important part, but not the center of the story).

Perhaps Cetus Insolitus: Sea Serpents, Giant Cephalopods, and Other Marine Monsters in Classic Science Fiction and Fantasy (http://www.amazon.com/Cetus-Insolitus-Serpents-Cephalopods-Monsters/dp/1930585667/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1277642409&sr=1-1) will do? Its an anthology of (quite) older stories rather than a novel, but it sounds interesting.

This is Steve Alten's stock in trade, the only problem being he's not very good.

saw it last night at the half-price book store here in Apple Valley.

Meg: Primal Waters. Same author.

And now that I hit Amazon with that, there's Meg: Hell's Aquarium.

What about the Loch or the Trench? The covers look creature-feature to me.

Does anyone know if Deep Blue Sea the movie was based on a book? I'm thinking it was because the whole shark back-story wasn't quite there in the movie, I figure that's more in the book version... and Leviathon the movie might have had a book behind it. Not that I remember that being... a sea creature?

I admit, if you are interested/intrigued by Steve Alten, just scan through a bunch of his stuff. I haven't read any of the Meg series, but I finished The Loch last November, and didn't hate it.

You also might try: Extinct - Charles Wilson
Predators - Mark Washburn & Robert Webb (*this one might push the limits of good taste though..it involves a combat-event between a Kodiak Brown Bear & a Great White. I enjoyed it while in High School..but not sure if I could finish it now..lol)
...there is another giant octopus/squid book that came out around the decade that Jaws saw publication...don't remember the name of it, but you might try a google search for giant octopus fiction or some-such deal...
