A mini-introduction and a question

Hello, all. I have recently stumbled upon this forum and I am glad I have. It seems that there is interesting discussion going on about both Fantasy and SciFi here. I hope to be able to participate in a meaningful way from time to time.

My first question: Looking through posts, I don't see mention of Janny Wurts. I have recently picked up my first Wurts novel, but have not yet started reading. Should I be wary. I like fairly serious, well written works. Thanks in advance, Erf.

Janny Wurts is one of the better authors around at the moment IMO. Especially her Wars of Light and Shadow. I think it rivals Wot and Ice and Fire.
For some reason I don't understand she doesn't seem to get mentioned much on this site though.

Which does she lean more towards? I quit on Wheel because it got to the point that it seems he is just filling up pages for the sake of making the publisher more money. It doesn't seem that he really has a vision for where he wants it to go, other than just long. I don't mind things that are long because the story needs length. I do mind things that are long just for the sake of being lots of books. Ice and Fire, at least so far (have only read the frst 2) seems okay...the first two books seem to have had a clear goal in mind that is moving the plot towards conclusion.

Thanks for the reply, Shannon.
Erf.

with all due respect to you and Mrs Wurts, but her writing is appalling. I tried severall of her prosa , but have sofar not managed to finish a single book. The Miswraights is a complete wast of time and the stormwarden did my head in.

(little did she know that the island she was stranded on, in reality a space ship was. .....what !!!)

I did find her interesting in her coop with Feist , but her own books are just about the worst I ever read.

But than again , rest assure , she has quite a few advocates on this forum. Quite a few people tend to find her rather skilful and entertaining.

I thought the Empire trilogy was brilliant and still is one of my favorite stories. But I tried to read one of her other books (the name escapes me but it was the first one in the second trilogy started by Mistwraiths) and couldn't get through the first chapter. It seemed to read very heavily if you know what I mean. It didn't flow.

Erf,

If you can get past the convoluted sentence structure and obscure vocabulary, her Wars of Light and Shadow series (Curse of the Mistwraith, etc) is very good. Great characters, well written battle scenes, and a smattering of politics here and there make for well rounded stories.

The Empire series which she co-wrote with Raymond Feist was also good. You might enjoy that more, though, if you've read Feist's Riftwar Saga first.

Jordan knows where he is going cause everything is leading up to,fingers crossed, the best ending to any series ever.

I read barely the first page of The Curse of the Mistwraith one time in a library. I guess I may like it now, I'd only read Feist at the time. My friend who got me reading Feist and Jordan (and I love them as much he does) does not really like Janny Wurts. I trust his opinion. Anyway, there are so many other writers on my list to read above her.

The Empire Trilogy with Feist was brilliant, but I'm not sure what input Wurts had. I think she played a big hand in the creation of Kelewan and the Tsurani which means she's pretty cool.
