....still hoping to top WOT

This is a great board and full of great suggestions. I haven't been here in awhile, but I did post a message awhile back asking about what I should read, given that I thoroughly enjoyed WOT (at least until about the 5th book). I got a lot of suggestions from you guys, but the most prevalent were: Donaldson's Covenant series and Martin's Game of Thrones. So, I've read those two books and I plan to continue Martin's series, but Lord Foul's Bane just hasn't captured my interest enough to continue it.

I sure wish Jordan would have wrapped up his series earlier. In my mind, he is the best at weaving a good story. About the only criticism I have of him is that his pace isn't balanced. For example, he tends to drag on a little too long about inconsequential things and then it's like he suddenly realizes he needs to wrap things up and he packs a heck of a lot of stuff into the final 60 pages or so. Of course, my other criticism is that he didn't wrap it up sooner. It is now more of a burden to me to continue with his series, but I sure as heck want to see how it ends.

Martin's "Game of Thrones" captured my attention. To me, he is a 2nd place to Jordan in his ability to weave a story, but it has enough elements in it, and I care enough about the characters, to go further into it.

Maybe I'm premature about Donaldson's series, because I haven't quite finished Lord Foul's Bane, but frankly I don't know what the fuss is about. I can't get excited about this book. To me, Covenant is a total weenie. I suppose if it were my first series (after Tolkein) I might have gotten a little more excited, but it's just not doing it for me. I will place it next to my "Sword of Shannara" book on the lower bookshelf in my category of "dissapointing fantasy novels".

So, assuming nothing will ever top LOTR, I'm still looking to top WOT. Any more suggestions?????????

Ulf64, in addition to trying Matthew Woodring Stover, John Marco, Tad Williams, Robin Hobb, James Barclay, Michael Moocock, Steven Brust, Kate Elliot, I would suggest reading through the suggestions in the following links:

I would also suggest picking up the Legends Anthology which features a number of short novels from today's prominent fantasy authors.
