Help me find a book, please!

Can Somebody Help ME!

I am looking for a book, but I don't remember who wrote it or the title. (Yeah, I know, but it's been a while.) If anything that I say rings a bell, can you let me know what the name of the book is and the author. Thank you.

The book was a collection of short stories, all science fiction related. There were only about 3 stories that I really remember:
1) a man writes about a couple that moves in next door. For some reason they seem strange. Near the end of the story, the neighbor talks about how people in the future "time travel" to different times as if they were vacationing.
2) a man has a friend, a woman, but she is nice but not attractive to him. He eventually stumbles across a magic store (I think!) and finds incredible "real" magic items. Including X-Ray glasses, and a candy-bar that makes the person eating it fall in love with the first person they see.
3) a man, down on his luck, runs into a guy at a bar and the guy tells him that if he wants to get away from it all, that he knows of a way to go to mars (or something like that). So this guy goes to a travel agency, like the guy told him to, and demands to go to mars. He is told to come back later. When he does, he gets on the bus and is driven, with a few others, to a barn out in the middle of nowhere. They are all told to go inside and sit on some bails of hay. While sitting there, the guy figures that they have all been tricked. After trying to convince everyone else that he has been tricked, he runs outside the barn. When he does, the inside of the barn is immediately bathed in a bright light... and then it vanishes. He runs back inside.... to find no-one.

Ok, first let me say, thank you for reading this. If you know what book this is, please let me know! Thanx. Jeff H.

I ran across that same barn story synopsis somewhere else a couple of weeks ago, but can't for the life of me remember where. I've never read any of theses stories, though. Good luck!

Oh yeah... I read that third story when I was a kid, but not the first two (or at least they didn't stick in my memory so much). It wasn't mars though, just your basic paradise. It ends with the guy totally failing to ever get a hint of such a thing from the travel agency again, and the line "I know because I've tried. And tried. And tried."

Your descriptions sound rather Alan Dean Fosterish to me, but I couldn't verify the hunch based on a web search for his stories. Sorry and good luck.
