robot whale with little friend trilopod, very odd name

There was this book and it had a really odd name and it's right on the tip of my memory....it was a great book , the whale was half organic half machine. Man kind was gone fromt he oceans, she stranded herself on an island so she didn't sink when she gave up on them coming back, but sent her "dog" robot trilopod to search the earth one last time for life and he found it. There were underwater air pods with people living in them and refugees from an underground city that wasn't worth living in. god what is the name of that book! ok, if you can help thanks! I thin it was from sometime in the sixties. :eek::confused:

I think the story you are looking for is 'Rorqual Maru' by T. J. Bass [appeared in Galaxy Jan1972].

There are more stories in the same setting - Half Past Human and Song of Kaia being two of them.

I assume the book "Godwhale" is a compilation of these stories. Been years since I read it, always assumed it was a novel.
